The Oldest and Most Dangerous AutoCAD User Group

April 2000

Lynn Allen is our guest speaker at the April VAUS meeting!!!
Lynn Allen

Lynn Allen

Manager, Autodesk User Groups

I have spent 12 years teaching people how to use AutoCAD. I taught in universities and colleges but most of my time was spent teaching engineers and architects in corporations. I have taught AutoCAD all over the world including the Middle East.

As I was growing up I found that I enjoyed my math classes the most. I liked figuring out the right answers to problems - it reminded me of solving puzzles. I liked math so much I decided to major in it in college. All of that geometry came in handy when I started to learn how to use AutoCAD. AutoCAD darws with objects like lines, arcs and circles.

Now I work with the people who use all the Autodesk products. I am the User Group manager. A user group is a bunch of people who get together to talk about Autodesk software. I get to fly all over the world and talk to people about AutoCAD and encourage them to be active in their user group.

I also have a monthly column in a technical magazine called CADENCE. I have had this column for over 6 years. It's much like having a report that's due every month. I don't even get a break over holidays or summer vacation! I'm glad I listened closely to my English teachers because it's really helped me become a good writer.

The thing I like most about my job is working closely with our customers. I like to help them learn new things about AutoCAD software so I can make their jobs easier.

When I'm not working I enjoy playing tennis with my 16 year old son or shopping with my 14 year old daughter. I also take my two dogs Misty and Alex for lots of walks to keep me and them in good shape!

New courses

3 New courses are added to our schedule:

Introduction to Architectural Desktop

Gives you an introduction to the features and techniques needed to work with AutoCAD Architectural Desktop™ -- the advanced features built on AutoCAD 2000® specifically for Architects.

AutoCAD Architectural Desktop (ADT) provides many parametric features for architectural design and documentation tasks. ADT extends AutoCAD 2000 with design specific tools for conceptual design, design development, working drawings and documentation phases of your workflow. You can import, and export, at any step in each phase to other CADD and traditional tools.

This introduction will provide an overview of the phases, concepts and features in ADT to allow you to "test the water" with these tools. While this is a very large step past basic CADD tools, there are some limitations of using this advanced tool; we will outline where both the strengths and weaknesses exist in ADT.

Intermediate Architectural Desktop

Following the Introduction course, we will examine the techniques of using ADT for design, documentation and presentation. A more in-depth study of the tools provided, and the techniques that take full advantage of the new features in Release 2 of AutoCAD Architectural Desktop

Introduction to 3D Studio VIZ

An introduction to the presentation and animation tools for both Architectural and Mechanical designers. This course provides an overview of the features in 3D VIZ and many of the techniques needed to transfer AutoCAD drawings into VIZ.

3D Studio VIZ is a design tool in its own right, however we will focus on bringing in models developed in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Architectural Desktop for rendering and animation. The application of materials and lights to achieve a realistic rendering -- a still image is the primary goal of this course. We will take a look at some of the basics of animation for presentation
